Purpose Statement

The purpose of the Higher Certificate in Law qualification is to prepare students who do not meet the minimum institutional admission requirements for access to diploma or degree studies in the College of Law. This program is designed to introduce students to foundational legal principles and legal practice by imparting systematic knowledge, skills, and theoretical competence within the field. The qualification aims to equip graduates with sound knowledge and the confidence to apply their skills in contemporary society, allowing for further study in the College of Law or within other colleges that do not impose specific subject requirements.

Specific objectives of the program include:

• Preparation of candidates for studies in the world of law.
• Enhancement of candidates' proficiency in the English language for the study of legal fields.
• Improvement of candidates' general computer skills, especially for business applications.
• Equipping candidates for higher education in an open and distance learning environment.

The program will be presented using both online and distance learning modalities.

Rules

• Students are required to have access to a computer, printer, and the internet throughout their studies.
• Students who have completed phased-out modules retain their credits and are not required to pass the replacement modules; however, it must be noted that phased-out modules need to have been passed specifically for this qualification.
• Specific module replacements include:
  • EUP1501 is replaced with IRM1501.
  • SCL1502 is replaced with IRM1501.
  • ENN103F is replaced with ENG1503.

Who Can Register?

• Applicants: New applicants and Unisa students applying for a new qualification may only register if they have received and accepted an offer of placement from Unisa.
• Re-registering Students: Students wishing to register for the 2026 academic year may do so once the registration period opens. Students looking to start a new qualification must apply online during the prescribed application period.
